The opportunities that the Internet of Things is opening up are limited only by our imagination, but the risks of cyberattacks and manipulation are also worsening proportionally. Digitization and the connection of machines, control units, and other IoT devices to the Internet make companies vulnerable. In addition, the first generation of smart devices has very little or no security measure at all. Businesses need mature concepts, processes, well-trained management, and novel and scalable strategies to deal with such threats in a timely manner.

This conference, hosted in cooperation with the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, gathers leading business and academic experts who can provide in-depth insights, guidance, security strategies, and application-oriented solutions around the Internet of Things and its industrial incarnation.

Dr. Soeren Finster, IT Security Architect and Team Leader of the Embedded Security Team at Wibu-Systems, will be speaking about “IoT vs. Things on the Internet”. He will point out how the plethora of supposed IoT devices available today on the consumer marketplace in truth qualifies instead as Things on the Internet, due to intrinsic security flaws and conceptual weaknesses in their design. In the context of his research on practicable security for software-based industrial plants, he will move on to assess the principles of Industrie 4.0 and the ultimate pillars that robust and flexible IoT based infrastructures need to provide and guarantee.
