Product protection and know-how protection for the automation industry

Karlsruhe – The result of successful cooperation between software protection supplier Wibu-Systems AG and the supplier of CoDeSys for PLC application development, 3S-Smart Software Solutions GmbH, will be presented for the first time at the joint CoDeSys booth in hall 7-530 at the trade show SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2011 in Germany.
The CodeMeter encryption tools are completely integrated into the CoDeSys development environment and will be available in the future under the name CoDeSys Security. Both manufacturers of industrial machinery as well as users of PLC solutions will benefit from the extended security functions, as the topic of investment protection has gained importance by preventing reverse engineering of software.
The latest CoDeSys version 3.5 in combination with the protection hardware, CoDeSys Security Key, allows manufacturers of automation solutions to effectively protect their developed solutions based on IEC 61131-3 against product piracy by using the CodeMeter technology. Thus – the CoDeSys security system helps to protect valuable know-how against reverse engineering, unauthorized copying and transfer to other PLCs.
The request for an integrated protection system offering security in relevant industrial machinery will be fulfilled by the additional available security functions: “signed application” and “encrypted communication”, between programming PCs and PLCs. In combination with an integrated user administration tool, manipulation of a PLC by a third person is prevented.
Additionally the manufacturers of machines can introduce new business models such as Pay-per-Use or Feature-on-Demand for their PLC’s, and can easily create and supply required licenses for their customers. Software protection using the hardware CmDongle is characterized by effective license management and ease of handling as all information is available any time and anywhere. All CoDeSys security functions are optional and can be used stand-alone.
Two panel discussions will complement the trade fair presence for fair visitors: one of the panel members is Oliver Winzenried, CEO of Wibu-Systems AG as well as CEO of the group “Protect-Ing” of VDMA (German Engineering Federation). Discussion panels include: “Security in Automation” on November 22 and “Know-how protection in Automation and Production – Challenges and Solutions” on November 24 – both in German language at the VDMA forum located in hall 4A-541.
Oliver Winzenried adds: „During the development we have experienced positive feedback for the integration of CodeMeter into CoDeSys. We have worked closely with one another at closing the gap between product protection and know-how protection within the automation industry – offering feasible solutions for this industry. The basis for doing so is the protection hardware – CmDongle, which provides a high level of security, flexibility and robustness within factory environments and at the same time offering various form factors that retrofit easily into existing PLCs, such as CF and SD cards.”

Special Award for Cutting Edge Technology in Know-How Protection

First Prize for Wibu-Systems at Security Award Baden-Wuerttemberg for preventing Product Piracy
Karlsruhe – The application of Wibu-Systems AG with its solution to protect know-how and prevent product piracy was well received by the judging panel at the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The first prize of the Security Award Baden-Wuerttemberg 2011 was presented to Wibu-Systems on March 24th, at the "eltefa" trade fair in Stuttgart. Oliver Winzenried, CEO and founder of Wibu-Systems, received the sculpture "Security Award" together with the certificate by Beate Bube, President of the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The solution Pro-Protect was a convincing winner as it demonstrated that companies could now for the first time simultaneously protect embedded machine software, related service documents and production data effectively. Pro-Protect supports companies to safeguard their revenues and know-how whilst sustaining their competitive edge.
Pro-Protect is one of ten projects fostered by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the research campaign against product piracy (more details at www.produktionsforschung.de). Wibu-Systems as coordinator, together with its industrial partners ZSK Stickmaschinen GmbH, GIS Gesellschaft für Informatik und Steuerungstechnik mbH, HOMAG Holzbearbeitungstechnik AG, and its research partner FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik, extended the existing CodeMeter software protection technology to meet special requirements and needs of the machine and plant engineering branch. The protection hardware covers the newly developed plug-in cards to be retrofitted in existing controls and embedded systems meeting industrial needs, such as enhanced resistance and extreme temperature ranges. The form factors incorporate high level security as access privileges are stored in the secure Smart Card chip.
Oliver Winzenried commented: "With the security solutions incorporated within Pro-Protect we are able to help make replicas of machines and devices more difficult, to protect the know-how embedded within software and documents, to enhance service efficiency, and also to increase sales by introducing new business models. We have been able to close the existing gap of standardized protection systems. The Security Award is very valuable for us – the Award itself and the positive feedback of our customers successfully fending off product piracy increases our commitment in developing even more sophisticated solutions for protecting know-how. Our objective is to reduce the damage caused by product piracy. There remains much to be done: according to the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), in 2010 the damage caused by product piracy in the German engineering branch summed up to an estimated 6.4 billion Euros."

Wibu-Systems develops Solutions for Cloud Computing: Project MimoSecco presented for the first time at CeBIT

CodeMeter and Data Protection in the Cloud: Demo shows first results

Karlsruhe – Cloud computing as a new business model is to promote strong growth and innovation in the IT market. The basic idea of the model is to use services on-demand and to pay as-you-go. Customers require this model to be fit for practice while safeguarding their data in the company's data and business processes. Models can be outsourced to service providers or staff members, who require sensitive company data on mobile devices, smartphones, or in home offices. Since 2010, 'Middleware for Mobile and Secure Cloud Computing' (MimoSecco), a project of Wibu-Systems and its partners CAS Software AG, and the Institutes AIFB and EISS at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), has been developed as a flexible middleware solution for the cloud. The first results of the project are currently presented at CeBIT 2011, located at the booth of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) in Hall 9, Booth B47. In addition, in another separate project called S4Cloud, Wibu-Systems and its partner Fraunhofer Institut für Techno- und Wirtschaftsmathematik (ITWM) are developing a solution for software license management in the cloud.
The project MimoSecco stresses two main aspects when protecting mobile data in the cloud: Firstly, the secure remote data access by mobile devices, and lastly, the user control over one's own data. Both aspects involve preventing misuse by third parties or service providers. Based on these aspects, the MimoSecco model combines a new middleware construction kit for vendors, and an universal security hardware process for users. The construction kit allows vendors to easily establish blocks for protecting and managing rights applied to any device (smartphones, desktops, and servers) and the cloud. The security component to be considered are the new German ID card combined with CodeMeterAct or the CodeMeter protection hardware variants USB, SD card, or MicroSD card.
Oliver Winzenried, CEO and founder of Wibu-Systems AG, explains: "Cloud computing will become a success story only when security and trust can be combined in a practical solution. MimoSecco comes into play, particularly, where SMEs can profit from its applicability. The SMEs concentrate on their competencies and are supported by the construction kit for use in security functions within their applications. With minimum efforts, MimoSecco allows SMEs to be able to modular their applied platform-independent middleware."

CodeMeter with worldwide smallest software protection dongle: Premiere at CeBIT 2011 and Embedded...

Karlsruhe – Wibu-Systems introduces the world's smallest dongle at this year's spring fairs: the CodeMeter CmStick/C. Fair visitors are able to experience the CmStick/C for protecting and licensing software at the Wibu-Systems booth at CeBIT in Hall 11 B 25 and at Embedded World in Hall 11 at the joint Microsoft booth 318. The entire CodeMeter technology is compacted into a thumbnail-sized hardware device.
When connected, the extremely tiny case does not protrude more than 4 mm from the USB port. The functions of the CmStick/C match the ones of the other CodeMeter variants. The core, i.e. the SmartCard Chip, is integrated in the connector and safely stores thousands of licenses.
Although the case is tiny, customers are able to apply laser engravings or order their CmStick/C in several colors. Especially practical is the use of the new CodeMeter hardware for notebooks or installed in cash register systems, medical devices, or control systems of machines and plants.
"As small as it gets," said Oliver Winzenried, CEO and founder of Wibu-Systems AG. "With the CmStick/C we can meet the requests of our customers for whom our existing CmSticks are too big for the USB interface. We succeeded in integrating all components in an extremely small case. All components are self-designed and self-manufactured: the metal cage, the plastic component, and the chip-on-board with gold USB connector. With it projecting only 4 mm unplugging the CmStick/C is easy enough – you can't beat that."
The platform-independent CodeMeter solutions are available for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit, Windows Embedded, CE and Mobile, Mac OS X, Linux, Real-time Linux, VxWorks, and more. Support for the popular SoftPLC system is currently being developed and is expected this year.

First-time introduction 2011 at CeBIT and Embedded World: software protection CodeMeter with...

First-time introduction 2011 at CeBIT and Embedded World: software protection CodeMeter with battery-backed clock
Karlsruhe – Frequently, software vendors require a secure time, for example, when specific computations or subscription calculations are at hand. For such cases, the hardware variants of CodeMeter software protection already have been equipped with an internal clock in the SmartCard chip. At this year's CeBIT and Embedded World, Wibu-Systems presents the extended CodeMeter hardware CmStick/T; it combines the advantages of the existing mechanism based on time certificates and a battery-backed clock.
Fair visitors are able to have a first look at the concept and the CmStick/T at the Wibu-Systems booth at CeBIT in Hall 11 B 25 and at the Embedded World in Hall 11 at the joint Microsoft booth 318. The CmStick/T especially suits companies offering their solutions in the form of time-based licensing models, or when solutions are only sporadically used and are not integrated in networks.
The existing CodeMeter time concept features an internal clock running while the PC is powered. It synchronizes forward with the PC clock and by using time certificates provides a manipulation-safe clock setting. However, in some cases, an independent and permanently running clock is required as, for example, when the protected software is rarely used or the period of use is short. The new CmStick/T with its battery-backed clock bridges the time period until the user PC is powered on the next time. Then the battery-backed clock of the CmStick/T is used to forward synchronize the time in the CmStick/T. The concept of the secure clock remains effective also in the case the battery exhausts after some years: then the CmStick/T acts as a CodeMeter hardware without battery-backed clock.
Oliver Winzenried, CEO and founder of Wibu-Systems, explains: "With the CmStick/T we succeeded in combining the advantages of our unique existing concept with a battery-backed clock. Thus we achieve highest ease of use, top security, and long operation life; even in the case the battery is empty, the clock works secure. Manipulating the clock chip by hardware specialists is without effect since the time in the SmartCard Chip is never set back."
