Advantages for both machine manufacturers and end users

In 2012, B&R teamed up with Wibu-Systems AG, one of the world's foremost software security and anti-piracy technology companies. "The security functions we have gained through this partnership are extremely beneficial to machine manufacturers and end users alike", explains Hans Wimmer, managing director of B&R. Put simply, these functions will allow customers to protect the source code of their software in B&R Automation Studio while still being able to generate proprietary program code for use on control systems and industrial PCs.
Protection against copying, analysis and manipulationThese new security functions provide protection against a wide range of attacks, including the copying of source code to different systems. Code analysis is also not possible, thus stopping any type of reverse engineering in its tracks. Finally, source code is fully protected against unauthorized changes – a form of attack recently made famous by the Stuxnet computer worm. All of these advantages add up to complete protection of software and system integrity.
Developing new business modelsB&R customers also have the opportunity to implement new business models that take advantage of pay-per-use or feature-on-demand options for functions to be enabled and sold at a later time. These types of models, already being used by B&R customers, are the same models used by B&R for technology functions. As such, they offer a way for customers to benefit by only licensing the components they need.
"We are very pleased to be working together with B&R," says Oliver Winzenried, CEO of Wibu-Systems. "This partnership is the result of many years of experience in addition to our extensive investment in the area of industrial applications, as demonstrated by our software-based CmActLicense solution as well as our CmDongle hardware, which is available in the form of USB flash drives as well as microSD, SD and CF cards."

CodeMeter: the security standard for the automation industry

In December 2012 Wibu-Systems AG joined the OPC Foundation as a new active member. This is part of the strategy meant at delivering added value to the automation industry through Wibu-Systems’ security solutions. The unique values that Wibu-Systems bring to the table are: product and IP protection, protection from tampering and reverse-engineering, as well as business enablement and logistic simplification by means of flexible licensing models based on function driven software modules.
Automation systems are more and more interconnected; „Industry 4.0“ usually refers to “Cyber-Physical Systems” and self-configuring machines, that are highly efficient and allow for the manufacturing of customized low volumes. The OPC Foundation offers a standard, the “OPC UA”, which clearly defines the secure authentication of networked control systems. With its solution CodeMeter, Wibu-Systems will offer new impulse to the “Security” aspect. The certificates will be OPC UA-compliant and safely stored in the activation file CmActLicense or in the smart card-based hardware device CmDongle, thus facilitating the roll out of certificates.Thomas Burke, OPC Foundation President and Executive Director, further explains: “The OPC Foundation is excited to welcome Wibu-Systems as a member, and we look forward to seeing the CodeMeter security and licensing solutions OPC UA enabled. The CodeMeter solution is cross platform compatible making OPC UA a logical choice for Wibu-Systems.”Oliver Winzenried, CEO and founder of Wibu-Systems, adds: “Just like copy and IP protection guarantee for manufacturers’ business success, security is essential to industry automation. On the one hand it is about “Safety”, basically the measures aimed at protecting personnel and environment during machine runtime. On the other side it is “Security” that matters in order to prevent software functionality manipulation and hardware component tampering. The “OPC UA” standard provides excellent mechanisms which we further make simple and secure with our compliant CodeMeter technology. This is the mission statement underlying our strategy: establishing CodeMeter as the security standard in the automation industry.”

Wibu-Systems’ answer to cyber physical attacks

It is a fact that M2M is entering an unprecedented phase of interconnectivity, one where plants and equipment are not just fully automated but also controlled remotely over the Internet, from offsite locations or even via cloud computing. The incremental efficiency, the lower labor cost, the acquisition of competition advantage are clear and obvious to all. Just like any other technological revolution though, Industry 4.0 opens also up to new challenges that original equipment manufacturers need to get ready for.The forms of attack manifest in several possible ways; they can include tampered components looking exactly like the original ones, or a different set of software commands, or botnet-like actions to gain control over an entire manufacturing line. Whether the attack is carried out from within the plant itself during maintenance, or externally via unauthorized access to the net, the results might be disastrous. The victim can see for instance its warranty terms becoming inapplicable, its production process sabotaged, new competitors springing up at practically zero investment. A challenge is however nothing more than an identified scenario we can find solutions for. Wibu-Systems, with a proven record history in IP protection against software reverse engineering, and copy protection versus illegal duplication, is standing up to support OEMs. The vendor has in fact joined the Alliance for Cyber Security as a validated partner; this task force was created by the German Federal Office for the Security of Information Technology (BSI), and founded in cooperation with BITKOM, the voice of the Information Technology, telecommunications and new media industry in Germany. The integrity protection system which Wibu-Systems has developed is based on a chain reaction where each step of the process is verified: boot loader, operating system, real-time application, configuration data are screened through one after the other. The encryption and signature of the original software by means of symmetric, asymmetric algorithms and hash functions is the core principle upon which the whole mechanism is based upon. Forward and backward checks through trustworthy elements increase the security layer. The CodeMeter technology for embedded systems is available for Windows Embedded, Real Time Linux, VxWorks, CODESYS and more to come.“To support the German Cyber Security strategy the Alliance for Cyber Security has been founded by BSI and BITKOM. This important instrument can work well only with the support of companies like Wibu-Systems, representative for the powerful German IT security branch", explains Michael Barth, head of the department Defense and Internal Security at BITKOM.“With a company entirely dedicated to innovate the security market over the last decades, we believe that the unique resources we can contribute with for the knowledge base the Allianz is building up will prove of extreme technological and software monetization value to the community of enterprises, government bodies, municipalities and private users that is rounding up this new initiative”, states Oliver Winzenried, CEO and founder of Wibu-Systems.

Wibu-Systems, an innovative security technology leader in the global market of lifecycle software...

Wibu-Systems, an innovative security technology leader in the global market of lifecycle software licensing, has announced today the release of the Embedded Development Kit for CodeMeter® supporting VxWorks (EDK), which will provide original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with a unique solution out of the box jointly offering complete IP protection, secure boot and embedded license management.
The EDK includes milestones of Wibu-Systems portfolio: CodeMeter Runtime for Wind River VxWorks real-time operating system, CodeMeter AxProtector, the protection tools integrated with Wind River Eclipse-based Workbench, and the smart card powered security CmDongles, namely CmStick/M, CmCard/µSD and CmStck/C, all hardware form factors relying on the award winning CodeMeter technology. The CmStick/M comes with a preloaded bootable Linux distribution along with the tools for PC developers; the CmCard/µSD includes the image of VxWorks and the applications for the target board; CmStick/C contains the license for additional features of the target board. The Emerson Network Power NITX-315 is a Nano-ITX embedded motherboard, featuring the Intel® Atom™ processor E6xx series, with low power consumption and passive cooling capability. In particular, certain functionalities are proving especially effective in translating technical know-how into software monetization. Hardware root of trust, embedded software IP protection, embedded software license and flexible license management result in the complete prevention of jail break software, reverse-engineering and IP theft. Once code integrity is preserved through code signature, and the whole network is safe because no backdoor is left accessible through the device, the vendor can concentrate on his market strategy alone and even extend the business model to new licensing schemes that might for instance take into account features on demand or pay per use models. Thanks to the close cooperation with Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson and a global leader in embedded computing technology, and Wind River, a world leader in embedded and mobile software, Wibu-Systems is adding top-notch security to all virtualized automation processes. Wibu-Systems is also a member of the Wind River Partner Validation Program and Emerson Network Power is a hardware partner and participant in the Wind River On-Board Program.“There is currently no out-of-the-box solution in the industry that includes complete IP protection, secure boot with a hardware root of trust, and embedded license management, and that is exactly what we are bringing to the market with this EDK,” said Alexander Damisch, director of industrial solutions at Wind River. “Whether the OEM is active in the medical, energy or industrial arena, the EDK will ensure that the customer is using only genuine and authorized source code on the device; and through a quick and easy deployment, users will be able to considerably reduce development efforts and time to market.”“Enabling the Wibu-Systems EDK on our NITX-315 embedded motherboard offers an outstanding level of integration for software protection, which is increasingly important to customers,” said Eric Gauthier, vice president of product marketing for Emerson Network Power’s Embedded Computing business. “This solution will help OEMs protect their know-how and maintain their competitive advantage longer, while increasing the security of their system, or a wide range of applications including medical devices, process controllers, and kiosks.” “With Industry 4.0 catching speed and generating networked service infrastructures, Wibu-Systems is particularly excited to hold an active role in this revolution,” said Oliver Winzenried, CEO and Founder of Wibu-Systems. “The strategic partnership with Wind River has grown to a new level of maturity that allows both companies to leverage a combination of security and connectivity features in the machine-to-machine (M2M) world.”

We have the pleasure to exhibit directly at Microsoft’s pavilion, hall 5, booth 340.
Wibu-Systems is in fact a Microsoft certified Gold partner and a member of Windows Embedded Partner Network. You can read our most recent contributions to the Microsoft Embedded infoblast here.
At the Embedded World 2013 Wibu-Systems is presenting its CodeMeter® technology, a software protection and licensing solution that prevents reverse engineering and the reproduction of machines, plants and devices by encrypting and limiting the access to the source code. CodeMeter offers automation industry players top level security, flexibility and convenience for daily use and easy retrofitting in existing systems.
This year Wibu-Systems is announcing CodeMeter support for the latest Windows 8 Embedded Standard as well as the Embedded Development Kit for Wind River VxWorks-powered Emerson motherboards.
At Microsoft’ booth, the forum is rich with panelists. Oliver Winzenried, CEO and founder of Wibu-Systems, will speak about "Protection of Embedded Software"26.02.2013 | 4:00pm - 4:25pm

Abstract: Cyber Physical Systems in Industry 4.0 are embedded systems that are increasingly becoming interconnected. Vendors are requiring stronger protection for their intellectual property as well as prevention from any kind of manipulation to their software. Such demands are resulting from the German Engineering Federation – VDMA and the Japan Machine Foundation – JMF latest surveys.
Webinars informs ISVs about software monetization – based on a study by Frost & Sullivan

According to a recent Frost & Sullivan study, software monetization is the key concept enabling software development companies to thrive in today’s competitive environment and helps to ensure their relevancy into the future. The study also demonstrates that the creation and use of a secure, yet comprehensive license management solution is fundamental to success. The path to effective monetization begins with strategic planning in the earliest stages of the development process.Frost & Sullivan, the leader in growth consulting, conducted a series of customer surveys regarding the requirements and needs for software monetization and license management. The company recently released a white paper that sheds light on various aspects of a successful software monetization solution; which range from business-enabling licensing architectures to resilience against hacking. “In a challenging global economy, vendors and customers alike are seeking to grow their top line revenues while controlling bottom line costs. ISVs can no longer afford to dictate onerous licensing terms to their customers. Changing times demand that ISVs adapt towards customer-centric business models and customer-friendly enforcement, even as they improve their capability to control piracy and theft of intellectual property,” said Avni Rambhia, Senior Industry Analyst at Frost & Sullivan.Wibu-Systems, founded in 1989, devotes its resources to provide solutions that enable ISVs to enhance their monetization efforts. Wibu-Systems has vast experience in helping ISVs in all verticals and disciplines, independent of their size. Companies like Bosch, Sirona, Rockwell, GE and Wincor-Nixdorf, as well as thousands of mid-sized companies around the world have increased revenue and cut costs through the use of solutions from Wibu-Systems. Security is one of the key differentiators that propels Wibu-Systems to the forefront amongst license vendors – securing the license and intellectual property of the ISV. Wibu-Systems excels in enabling software monetization by providing a flexible license platform that delivers features and functionality on-demand for the ISV's end-users.Wibu-Systems will be hosting a series of webinars to discuss their broad range of secure software licensing solutions for desktop and embedded vendors, and to discuss Frost & Sullivan’s findings related to the software license management market. Attendees will also be given the opportunity to directly engage with Wibu-Systems. Two upcoming events are scheduled for December 4 and January 15. Registrations available online at: https://www.wibu.com/fs.html„Not only were we recognized by Frost & Sullivan as a Hot Vendor in their Global Software License Management Market Study but we are very proud to be mentioned as a clear example of a vendor with strong commitment to both functional requirements and security goals, from developer and end-user perspectives, in their most recent study Best Practices in Software Monetization. The market is already following Wibu-Systems with great interest thanks to the diversity of our solutions; we are sure this additional analysis will guide ISV’s to a more informed decision making process,” states Oliver Winzenried, CEO and founder of Wibu-Systems.

Wibu-Systems excels in industrial product and know-how protection

For the first time ever CodeMeter from Wibu-Systems has been nominated one of the top 10 products by the jury of the German Automation Award 2012. CodeMeter is a premier technology designed to protect and license software in embedded systems. Software is indisputably the underlying element of industry automation. It is therefore essential that manufacturers can fully rely on it in order to count on steady production outputs and in turn constant revenues. The best-in-class security of CodeMeter lies in the match of the license with the controller software. Not only the executable code of the software is encrypted and digitally signed, but the license is either stored in a dongle or a file. This architecture has proven ideal against code tampering and hacking attacks. Several are in fact the international customers that have successfully qualified CodeMeter for their automotive, healthcare, CAD/CAM and multimedia businesses. During this year edition of SPS IPC Drives, the annual electronic automation marketplace taking place in Nuremberg, CodeMeter will be showcased by Wibu-Systems in hall 7, booth 640. At the same time it will be displayed together with all other finalist products at Konradin, a top specialist publishing group (hall 5, booth 306). During a presentation on November 27, 2 p.m., CodeMeter will be again under the spotlights at VDMA – the German Engineering Federation – in hall 4A, booth 541. A jury committee consisting of the SPS IPC drives congress association, VDMA, ZVEI and the editor board of “electro Automation” will award the prize after the show upon collecting votes directly from the visitors. At SPS IPC drives Wibu-Systems will not only illustrate the latest features of its product line, but also demonstrate practical implementations and provide additional educational resources. In particular there are a lecture and a panel discussion – both in German language:
“Software licensing, know-how and integrity protection for SPS programming systems with CodeMeter”, November 27, 10:20–10:40 a.m. at ZVEI in hall 8, booth 504. “Security in production: challenges for manufacturers, operators and machine vendors”, November 28, 3:00-4:00 p.m. at VDMA in hall 4A, booth 541.
Oliver Winzenried, CEO and founder of Wibu-Systems AG, is excited by the nomination: “During the trade show we are sure to collect numerous votes because integrity protection is at the heart of any automation process, regardless of the market segment the industry vendor is addressing. Our CodeMeter stands up against reverse engineering, imitation of equipment and operation tampering; as such it turns out to be an excellent business enabler for all automation powered companies.”

Karlsruhe – The special fair „Industrial Automation“ is dedicated to technologies such as product...

Karlsruhe – The special fair „Industrial Automation“ is dedicated to technologies such as product protection and know-how protection at this year’s Hannover Messe: it includes product marking, tracing and product protection. Wibu-Systems AG presents its protection solution CodeMeter during this fair in hall 7 at booth F48. Manufacturers for machines and plants can now protect their embedded software on almost any platform utilizing CodeMeter. The CodeMeter solution now provides integration support for the real-time operating system VxWorks and makes it very easy for the developer to integrate complex protection functions. The result of a partnership between Wibu-Systems as a Validated Partner with Wind River (an Intel subsidiary and vendor of VxWorks), is the integration of CodeMeter in the real-time operating system VxWorks and its tools. The AxProtector (Encryption Envelope) has been extended in a way that developers can encrypt and sign their VxWorks DKMs (Downloadable Kernel Module) and RTPs (Real Time Process). A modified VxWorks loader in the OS system controls that certifies that only the correct signed program code will be executed and that the functions will be decrypted depending on their license parameters. Starting with version 6.8 of VxWorks, CodeMeter is integrated as the protection mechanism and provides code encryption and code signature. In addition CodeMeter provides symmetric and asymmetric cryptographic functions via API interface. Also, individual licenses can be called or license parameters can be updated remotely for adding additional functions.Oliver Winzenried, C.E.O. of Wibu-Systems, explains: „Companies using software protection solutions to prevent reverse engineering are able to protect their know-how and keep their competitive advantage longer. Additionally they increase the system security by integrity protection: this is an essential requirement. The integration of CodeMeter in VxWorks enables the protection of any kind of application. For example medical devices, GSM basic stations, motor and wind engine controls, controllers in Smart Grids, gambling machines or a PLC for machines and plants. The CodeMeter technology offers product protection and know-how protection for the Windows world as well, and for the CoDeSys PLC for IEC61131 and other systems. At our booth we present the protection possibilities of CodeMeter related to practical examples and discuss the various customer requirements.”
